Extra Tryout Information
Extra Age Matrix and Play Format
OVERVIEW
The AYSO EXTRA program offers a competitive soccer experience for players with advanced skills and a strong passion for the game. Designed as an affordable alternative to club soccer, it focuses on player development for those aiming to play at higher levels, such as high school or competitive club teams, while upholding AYSO’s core values of teamwork, fair play, and enjoyment. The program is available for boys and girls in age groups U9 to U14.
Tryout Process
Players are selected through an open tryout process after the Fall Season, typically held in late November or early December. Tryouts evaluate:
- Defending
- Attacking
- Speed
- Ball Control
- Game Knowledge
- Attitude and Effort
Player and parent commitment is a key factor in final selection. Per AYSO EXTRA guidelines, players cannot participate in other club or non-AYSO soccer programs during the Fall primary season, including practicing or guest playing for other clubs.
Player Commitment
Participation in the EXTRA program requires a one-year commitment covering both Spring and Fall seasons (e.g., Spring and Fall 2025). Players must be registered with AYSO and are prohibited from playing on club teams during the fall EXTRA season to ensure focus on the program.
Season Length
Teams formed after winter tryouts play in the Spring season to prepare for the primary Fall season, starting August 1 and running through mid-December.
Cost
The registration fee is approximately $250, plus additional costs for custom Extra team uniforms, exclusive Extra training camps with ProTouch soccer, and tournament fees. This is significantly lower than club soccer costs, which can range from $2,000 to $3,000.
Playing Circuit
The EXTRA gaming circuit, sanctioned by Section 11, includes team within a geographical range of Los Angeles to San Clemente for older divisions (U10+). Younger divisions (U9) play locally in South Orange County (e.g., Lake Forest, Laguna Niguel, Mission Viejo, Ladera Ranch, Aliso Viejo).
Coaching Staff
We provided Extra coaches trained through AYSO’s advanced programs, with certifications exceeding the age group they coach. Professional trainers support the program to enhance individual player skills throughout the season. Coaches are volunteers, unlike many paid club coaches, ensuring dedication without the pressure of managing multiple teams.
