What do tryouts look like?

Tryouts focus on a variety of aspects ranging from technical ability, listening to directions, player attitude, how they work with teammates, and player impact in game situations.

During tryouts there is an independent panel of evaluators ranging from board members to primary/assistant extra coaches across our current extra teams to rate players on various components. These ratings are combined with year end coach evaluations to create a complete view of each player. Results are reviewed between the extra team coach for the team being formed, the Extra Team Coordinator, the Assistant Commissioner, and the Commissioner to complete team formation. Newly formed U9 extra teams typically carry 9-10 players and it is expected that there will be players trying out that do not make the team.

Below is example evaluation criteria:

Technical

·        EVALUATION CRITERIA: players’ dribbling, passing and ball control abilities including: turning, balance and touch while dribbling; passing with accuracy, pace, timing; and controlling techniques using various surfaces while maintaining eye contact with the ball and ultimately preparing the ball for the next move.

Tactical

·        EVALUATION CRITERIA: players’ overall skills in developing tactical play including: field awareness; communication; leadership; awareness of organization and shape of play; ability to play on and off the ball; and ability to support, create options and make appropriate runs that support the attack or defense.

Functional Attacking

·        EVALUATION  CRITERIA:  players’ ability to maintain possession under pressure, create individual and team space, turn on a defender, recognize and take the direct route to goal; anticipation, preparation, decisiveness and timing when shooting.

Functional Defending

·        EVALUATION  CRITERIA:  players’ defending control and balance, ability to establish appropriate marking distance, goal-side/ball-side position, ability to prevent an attacker from turning and tackling skills.
